The activities in systems biology at FCC are focused around the application and development of computational methods and mathematical models of biological systems on different levels of abstraction utilizing time resolved measurement data. The research is carried out in close cooperation with both academic and industrial partners.
Our research is funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR), the Swedish Complex adaptive systems master's programme at Chalmers. To understand the dynamics of increasingly complex phenomena where standard simulation methods are inadequate, stochastic algorithms, game theory, adaptive programming, self-similarity, chaos theory and statistical methods are used to describe and increase our understanding of complex systems To qualify as a PhD student, the applicant must hold a Master's level degree in biological engineering, bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, chemometrics or similar. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. Computational biology is a very broad discipline, in that it seeks to build models for diverse types of experimental data (e.g., concentrations, sequences, images, etc.) and biological systems (e.g., molecules, cells, tissues, organs, etc.), and that it uses methods from a wide range of mathematical and computational fields (e.g., complexity theory, algorithmics, machine learning, robotics, etc.). To extract biological knowledge from the data and translate it into benefits for society (e.g.
Bioinformatics, 2006, 22(4), 514-515. We have experience from multiple genomics techniques including genome sequencing, gene expression analysis (microarrays and RNA-seq), metagenomics and amplicon sequencing. Applications include cancer genomics, environmental sciences, microbiology, systematics and ecology.
